Something about sucking on a vape bag reaalllyyy gets me going. Let me be blunt. No vaporizer does a better job of filling said bag of fun than the Volcano vaporizer. I can only rave.

Go ahead, call me an elitist snob. I know the price tag is by no means pocket change…but I will put my stoner status on the line for the Volcano. It will fuck you up, and you will love it.

The Volcano definitely gives credence to the old adage “you get what you pay for.” When friends come to sit tee-pee style around my Volcano, they know their vape session won’t disappoint. Nobody says no to the Volcano.

My review pertains to the Volcano Classic, equipped with the Solid Valve set. I know there’s a digital Volcano, and there’s another valve set called EZ Valve, but I opted for neither.

My motivation behind what I went with:
The selling point for the Digital is its “precise [temperature] control.” While the Classic has a rotary knob and dial, the Digital features an LED screen that “tells you” the temperature at which your cannabis is being vaporized. Personally, I could care less about this feature, and I’ll tell you why.
The Classic retails for about $540, and the Digital at around $670. Nevertheless, for the extra $130, the Digital is accurate only to +/- 2.7 degrees, compared to the Classic’s +/- 9 degrees. Even with $100 increase in price, the vaporizer isn’t “telling me” the exact temperature anyway, so what’s point?

If you’re using your vaporizer strictly for cannabis consumption, I think you should pocket the extra $130 and just buy the Classic. The bioactive chemicals in cannabis burn ideally between temperature settings 5.5 through 7 (max 7.5) on the Volcano. Within this range fall tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at 149.3 °C, cannabinol (CBN) at 212.7 °C, and cannabidiol (CBD) at 206.3 °C.

I also happen to think the Classic looks better than the Digital. It strikes me as very old school mad scientist. If you ask me, it has more character. Plus, Storz & Bickel only offer their five year warranty to the Classic. Of course the question is always why. I’ll admit to some ignorance and disinterest there. I’m happy with my warranty and less cash out of pocket.

Now the Volcano is not enough to make the magic happen. You’ll also need a valve set; it includes, among other smaller pieces, the mouthpiece and bag. The valve set is included in the price but you’ll have to decide whether you’ll want an EZ Valve or Solid Valve. The difference is that the EZ Valve is replaceable so you don’t have to clean it. However you get 5 EZ Valves with your Volcano. A replacement set of 6 runs you $70.

I was not impressed by the EZ Valve set at all. I just think the Solid Valve is a nicer investment. It’s a sturdy stainless steel piece. When you hold it in your hand, you can feel the weight – a legitimate piece of engineering.

Further, The EZ Valve set gives you pre-sized bags (really, what they are giving you is a pre-sized valve set). With the Solid Valve set, you can size out your own bag. The feeling of freedom I get from vaping with a 2 foot+ bag really can’t be beat.

I knew I made the right decision in purchasing my Volcano when I first dissembled the Solid Valve mouthpiece for its first cleaning. The valve set comprises a bunch of intrinsically engineered component pieces. The level of detail and quality manufacturing of this product is astounding. It amazed me, and I’m not sure any description of mine could do it justice. Below you’ll see a picture of what I mean. Storz & Bickel = no joke.

Volcano Vaporizer Parts disassembled post-cleaning

Cleaning
After about 100 uses, I clean my Solid Valve set. I know people who recommend cleaning every 150 uses as fine. I noticed that the bag gets dirty before the rest of the valve set. This observation actually made me very happy, because I figured out that I can be more flexible with when/how clean. (For example, I can choose to only replace the bag if I see the rest of the mouth piece is not grimed up.)
Personally, I know I would be throwing money out the window if I purchased an EZ Valve set – because once the bag gets dirty, you have to throw out the entire EZ Valve set. And like I said before, their replacements aren’t cheap.

The Cleaning Process:
A cleaning brush is of course provided. Though the cleaning process is relatively simple, it can be time consuming due to the smaller size of some pieces. It can take a half hour to do a thorough job.
1.) Soak the pieces in alcohol for ten minutes.
2.) One by one, remove each piece from the alcohol and rub it clean with the brush. Gently scrub away any stubborn resin.
3.) Lay the pieces out to dry on some paper towels afterwards, and you’re done.

Replacing the bag on the Solid Valve is also quite easy…
1.) Simply cut to the size you want and stick it into the mouth piece attachment.
2.) A round rubber band-like component is included in the valve set. Use this to affix the bag into the mouth piece.

Of course, directions for all these procedures are included (with pictures!) when you buy a Volcano. They are actually pretty straightforward.

Technicalities aside, it’s time to discuss what it’s like to get high using a Volcano vaporizer. So without further ado…

The High….which is really why you read this review

Each time you reload the fill chamber with new bud, you can expect to get 5-6 bags out of it, depending on your heat settings. If there’s a bite in the vapor flavor, replace the cache. Spent bud may or may not cause you to experience a quick cough. My method is to start the Classic at 5.5 and work my way up to 7. After every bag, I’ll move it up half a notch. I usually vape a couple of bags at 6 however, which I think is the ideal temperature. You should not vaporize cannabis above the 7.5 mark. The first reason is that vaping cannabis above 7.5 on the Classic destroys nearly all its beneficial compounds. Second, vaporization is the most lung-friendly way to smoke since no actual combustion occurs. However if you set the vape to 8 or higher, you are effectively searing your lung and tracheal tissue. High settings are for other types of herbs (remember that the Volcano and other vapes are sold commercially for therapeutic purposes, meaning other people vaporize herbs like Sage, Chamomile and Lavender for their ailments).

Depending on the number of bags you inhale, you’ll be anywhere from functional to totally blitzed…but the high will still stay clearheaded. There is absolutely none of that soupy high so notorious to bongs and bubblers. It’s very clean. (That doesn’t mean that after 10 bags things don’t start to get hazy.) It’s also immediate, since the vapor can enter the bloodstream though the lungs. I can tell you that the Classic makes for an extremely efficient delivery system.

I’ve tried my share of portable vapes and whips. They can’t touch the Volcano. Not even with the tip of a finger. I believe what you’re paying for is the vapor quality in general. With the Volcano, the vapor is extremely smooth, almost like steam. Cheaper vapes tend to hit harder, and not in a good way. I don’t know what else to say except that you haven’t truly vaped until you’ve experienced the Volcano vaporizer…so get your own or get friendly with someone who has one.

PROS: Sexy, fun & efficient – it’s your ideal life partner! A strong, clear high; Conversation piece; Five year warranty!; Stoners love it!

CONS: $$$$$; No warranty offered on the Digital; Solid valve requires some maintenance, while the EZ valve can end up costing you more in the long run.

A few weeks ago I got my Jamullah grinder in the mail, I’ve been testing it out since. It came neatly packaged in a discrete brown box, with a sheet of paper stating that the grinder must be thoroughly cleaned before use. The grinders made of aluminum, so it’s fairly light, and the grinder pieces are quite sharp, but not enough to cut your fingers.. that’s a good or bad thing depending on how ya look at it. The holes for ground up nug are very small so the final ground up product is shredded to bits. This can be a hassle if your using somewhat wet herb and it may take 20-30 spins (yes.. we counted) before all the herb goes down.

It’s a standard 4-piece grinder with one of the newer features of other grinders which is the plastic ring (aka O-Ring) between the top lid and grinder head to allow easy lifting on and off without getting sticky icky herb preventing you from opening and closing it. My only problem with the plastic ring on this is that the plastic on the Jamullah grinder hasn’t been fully smoothed so it’s got a lot of rough spots on the ring, if you’ve got a big thumb, you’ll feel the rough edges of the plastic O-Ring on every grind.. The kief screen works flawlessly and better than most others I’ve experienced. It only catches very fine pieces, and the little shovelesque sifter helps ya gather it together. The grinder can be found on at the official Jamullah Grinder website. The pictures were taken after a single weeks usage.

Pros:

Only $14 (prolly the best value on the market)
Great kief catcher
Sharp shredders on grinder piece
2.6″ fits a lot of herb into 1 grinding sessions

Cons:

Rough edges on plastic O-Ring felt with every grind
Very small holes for nug, means more grinding required

EZ Wider Wild Berry
32 Leaves
$1.50/pack

Pro: Easy to roll with!!
Cons: Really, where’s the party? – flavoring is lame. Short size not my cup of tea. Harsh, unclean burn.

EZ Wider: Undoubtedly the most well-known cigarette rolling paper (with only Bambu rivaling at a close second). But there are inherent downsides to such fame. Being the most commercialized (found in 4 out of 5 convenience stores) has done nothing for this paper’s burn quality.

EZ Wider’s popularity definitely stems from its ease of roll. And EZ Wider’s Wild Berry addition does not disappoint in this department. This is one of the most forgiving papers on the market in terms of rolling. As such, its perfect for rolling newbs due to the durability, thicker leaf, and overall feel of the paper. One complaint is the 1.25 size, labeled on the packaging as “French Size.” I’m warning you now that you will end up with a smaller j when you roll with this…although I don’t understand the whole decision to include a French affilation on the packaging when 1.25 is also considered “Spanish size.”

To continue, EZ Widers Wild Berry is a great paper with which to build your confidence as a roller. I won’t downplay that point… But then again you can just grab a pack of good ol’ EZ Wider Double Wide and fulfill the same purpose.

So what gets me is this whole “Wild Berry” twist. Truly, the alleged “Wild Berry” flavoring leaves much to be desired, and seems very much tacked on as an afterthought. Sure, it’s sweet on the tongue while licking mid-role, but upon the first pull (and the subsequent pulls after which encompassed my smoke session) EZWWB did not produce that ‘oh so wild’ flavor advertised. It’s a harsh hitter, so expect to cough with this one. Moreover, it didn’t burn as cleanly as I’d have liked.

For these reasons, I’m branding EZ Wider Wild Berry a gimmick. I’m sure the colors and cover detailing used by EZWWB work well together to attact the eyes and wallets of newb smokers everywhere. I admit I fell for it back in the day. But that’s just good marketing, isn’t it.

The Bottom Line: Using this paper until you’re comfortable rolling is a great idea. But once you’ve reached pro status, move onto something more exotic for your $1.50.

About six months ago I bought myself a 5-piece SharpStone grinder from ebay user HippieKid23. At a reasonable price it came out to $29 with shipping. The grinder hasn’t jammed, required cleaning or even dulled since I received it. My last grinder was a noname brand I bought at a street vendor for $40 and was only four pieces and the kief catcher caught more than just kief. What I liked instantly about the SharpStone grinder was that the bottom kief catcher had smaller metal woven netting so it caught only the finest kief (the strong sh!t).

The quality of the grinder is very exceptional ALTHOUGH I have found pieces of the metal woven netting in my ground up bud on occasion. The pieces I found weren’t broken, but overhanging pieces that weren’t taken off properly in the assembly of it. That is my only complaint on the entire product. The SharpStone is the best economical Space Case type grinder on the market. Of course if your going to spring for an $80 grinder you end up paying more for the name.

Pros:

Does the job, and does it well

Bottom Kief Catcher is GREAT!!!

Grinder remains sharp after hundreds of uses

Large compartment for holding bud

Comes with a mini-brush to sort the kief out and a small bag to hold the grinder

Grips on the top and bottom and of the grinder so you can open it easily without cutting yourself on corners

Cons:

Occasionally find metal wire netting in bud.. not a big deal, but something you have to pick out yourself cause you definitely don’t want to smoke aluminum.

The kief catcher before the bottom most one fills up quickly and blocks access to the bottom layer so you may not always get 100% of the fine kief unless you clear it regularly.

I met Dr Hemp on Twitter, and he asked me if I’d be willing to review his product. I agreed.. and the first thing I did was scrutinize the product’s labeling. Being a habitual smoker, I wondered what the bottle meant when it said “Alleviates unwanted symptoms & Balances undesirable side-effects of cannabis consumption.” According to the Doctor Hemp website these symptoms and side-effects are:

Frequent upper-respiratory infections

Colds

Sore throat

Cough

Sinus Infections

Laryngitis

Tonsillitis

Aggravated allergies

Congested lymph and swollen lymph nodes.

Poor memory

Attention Deficit Disorder

But before squeezing a dropperful of something I’d received in the mail directly into my mouth, I googled the ingredients on the back of the bottle. Dr. Hemp warned me that the taste would be bitter, but that it was nothing I couldn’t get used to. There is in fact a very distinct taste to it, something that reminds me of a Chinese herbal shop… which happens to be where most the ingredients in the bottle can be found.

I said I would give a completely unbiased review, so I’m going to give you all my angles on how I really felt about this product, how the people I’ve shared it with felt, and overall if I recommended purchasing it.

Ingredients and Directions

The ingredients on the back of the bottle were mostly misspelled, according to Google (Did you mean “…?”). A few of the ingredients according to Wikipedia are used to clear out the lungs. A few others were for anxiety and the nervous system. (And surprisingly ‘anxiety’ isn’t listed as a marijuana side-effect, I don’t know why.)

Anyway, all of these promises just made me more excited to toke and try out the product.

So I did just that, I blazed up and tried it out. With 1 dropperful under my tongue I swore at the flavor. (Then I remembered I could take the dropperful in a glass of water.. I hoped maybe my memory would get better and I’d remember to do that next dose.)

Nevertheless, as I tried to clear my throat, my voice was clearer and I felt thoroughly refreshed, while still baked. I was a little in disbelief and figured that it must be the placebo effect, so I needed a second opinion.

I got two of my best friends together and we smoked five joints in a sitting. I told them I had a product I wanted them to try which promised to alleviate the unwanted side-effects of smoking. (They of course said the same thing I did, “What’s undesirable about smoking weed?” I replied, “Well you just try and tell me how you feel cause I’m writing a review on it.”)

This time we each ended up with minor sore throats after smoking outside. What a perfect way to test out the Doctor Hemp, I thought. We each poured a dropperful under our tongues and I watched as they were taken aback by the bitterness. I was used to the taste by my third dropperful. My friend whose a pill popper said that you know it works when it tastes bitter. On a side note, the taste subsides after a minute or so but the smell lingers on your breath for awhile. To continue, all of our sore throats did subside and we were on to playing video games and enjoying our high. Here’s what my friends said:

“Whoa that tastes gnarly but I actually feel better from it.”
“My sore throat went away and usually that’s the only thing that bothers me when I smoke a lot.”

My girlfriend, who was the most skeptical of the product, is ordering more because she feels that her lungs are more clear when she takes the Doctor Hemp. I’m all about being healthy, but after taking 20+ doses in my first week of testing it, I was beginning to feel dependent.

I decided to see if I could replicate the good feeling I felt after smoking and taking Doctor Hemp by drinking a glass of water and taking multi-vitamins instead of the product. The results? My sore throat didn’t go away instantly.. and that refreshed feeling was left to be desired.

I even got some old time smokers (55-70 year olds) to try this out and they all agreed that it made them feel better after smoking. One even said if it got rid of her munchies she would become the number one customer. But this is one of the negative side-effects of smoking which Doctor Hemp does not relieve… I would know, my appetite is still as enormous as always.

I own a Volcano Vaporizer, as I’ve been trying to take my dose of marijuana the healthy way for some time. But even vaping can cause a sore throat if you do enough bags. What’s great is that the Doctor Hemp even worked when I vaporized, so overall I was very happy with the product. I’m usually very harsh and very critical when it comes to these health products as they often make a ton of claims but fail to deliver. On its promises Doctor Hemp does deliver, and I would highly recommend Doctor Hemp for all Health Concious weed smokers.

EZ-Widers

Double Wide
$1.50 per pack
33 leaves

Pros: Good to learn with Cons: Too wide, harsh smoke, lots of paper

ATTENTION all n00bs, these are the papers for you. If you haven’t mastered the part of rolling where you tuck the paper under and create a cylinder, ez-widers have enough paper that you can roll it like a burrito, or a rug. The final product will have three layers of paper and probably taste terrible, but hey, you’re learning.

The main point of ez-widers is to be extra wide for rolling. The problem with that is why would anyone want a rolling paper that was super thick and not very long? There aren’t many other features that ez-widers feature. The texture of the paper is satisfactory but not very strong, and the adhesive strip could be a little stickier. Also since there is so much extra paper, it will be harsher smoke and have a less pleasant taste. Almost everyone I’ve encountered rips ez-widers in half before they roll them.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend these papers because for the same price you can get any other brand that has a better adhesive strip and less paper. However, those who have recently begun rolling, or those who are looking for some easy practice, pick up a pack of these ez-widers and take your time rolling a few. Soon you’ll catch on and graduate to another brand.

Bambu Papers
1.50 per pack
33 Leaves
Made in Spain

Bambu rolling papers are as standard as you can get. I remember first discovering them at the beginning of my rolling days. They allowed me to screw up a few times, yet not fall apart in my hands or tear due to excess licking. Be careful though, as any paper that gets too moist can and will rip.

33 papers per pack is a pretty conventional amount to have, even though in my opinion more is always better. Where Bambu really pulls through in the clutch is the length of the papers. At 3 inches, it’s neither too long nor too short, and if you need more, just roll another paper. The smoke could be a little lighter though, I often find myself noticing the taste of the paper, which isn’t what I want to be focusing on.

If you are looking for a reliable paper that no one will laugh at you for having (some still might), ask for a pack of Bambu at your local smoke-shop. Also, I highly recommend these for beginners, or someone who isn’t too comfortable rolling. You’ll find yourself getting comfortable with these, and then moving on to a more difficult or rewarding brand.

In general, if you’re scraping the bottom of your drawer looking for some papers and come across Bambu’s, you won’t be disappointed. Just like Statefarm insurance, like a good neighbor, Bambu’s are there.

Pros: Easy for beginners, Reliable, Common in Stores
Cons: Tastes a little funky, Could burn slower

Sometimes rip off too much
Box isn’t flat for pocket comfort

These are probably one of the cooler rolling papers you’ll encounter. Hemp Rips are a tube of rolling paper where you can pull out as long of a paper as you’d like and rip it off, allowing for the final product to be anywhere from an inch, to 15 feet. IMAGINE SMOKING SOMETHING 15 FEET LONG!
Once you’ve stopped using the hemp rips to measure certain body parts, or even use those body parts to help roll the paper (I’m talking about fingers), you’ll notice that the quality of the paper is pretty durable, accompanied by a sticky adhesive strip. These are no easier or harder to roll than any other paper.
The reason to buy these papers is that you get a standard quality paper with a reliable glue strip, but you can decide your own length. I often find that papers are too short, too long or too wide. In the case of Hemp Rips, they’re a perfect width, 53mm, and I can decide the length myself. Some days you’ll find yourself in the mood for a short rip, other days a long rip. The Rips allow you to always have what you want, and at 5 meters long, the amount of paper they give you equates to around 50 – 60 regular papers.
To many, rolling is a soothing process, something that calms the nerves before a relaxing smoke. Hemp rips offer yet another interesting aspect to rolling, as well as choice. That’s a huge factor for me. It’s like having short, medium, long, and gargantuan papers all in one pack, which is everything you could ask for.

Pure Hemp King Size
Price: 2 – 3 dollars
33 leaves
Made in Spain

Pros:
Long Lasting
Sticky
Good ratio of width to length

Cons:
Maybe a little too long. King Size is big
33 is ok, but 50 leaves would be plentiful

Pure Hemp is quite the impressive brand of cigarette papers. They produce a sturdy, yet delicate rolling paper that has a promising adhesive strip at the end. There have been times when I have reached for other papers first, only to have them rip, be too short, or have a shoddy adhesive. But one must look no further as Pure Hemp covers all the bases and leaves no one with a bad smoking experience. The actual appeal of these papers isn’t unveiled until you actually light them, but once you have, you’ll realize that they are burning so slowly, you could go have lunch come back, and be in the same place you left off.
Many a time has it been windy and these papers have stayed lit, saving me the hassle of taking out my lighter again and again. Another reason why I have taken a liking to these papers is because they have a classic look, a simple label, and the product delivers.

Vaporite Elevation (VR-005)

Price: $50 online

Pros:

Cheap

Cons:

Digital read is not accurate

Burns your product

Hard to put more product in without touching the scorching hot bowl (use a glove)

Wooden, smells funny after being on for too long

The reason why I came across this vaporizer was because my friend purchased it on a whim and then proceeded to leave it at my house for the next three weeks, forgetting it every time she was over. Otherwise my taste is too picky for this type of vaporizer, unless you’re looking for one where you don’t have to spend any money, and you kind of get the vaporizing experience, kinda.

The Vaporite Elevation features a wooden tower with a digital temperature read and a knob for temperature control. Inside is a ceramic heating element, and at the top of the tower is a hole for you to place the glass bowl into, at the peak of the heating element. Once you have placed the product in the bowl, you place the tubing on top and inhale.

On this vaporizer, you should aim 20 degrees lower than whatever temperature you are trying to get because the gauge is not very accurate. Many times people have burned their product because they set the temperature too high, make sure you set the temp accordingly.

I wish I could go on and tell you that this vaporizer does great things, but it really only “does the job.” You should buy this if you want to have the vaporizer as you secondary piece and a bong as your primary. But otherwise, take a little more out of your wallet and find something more to your liking.
